Overall Description: The purpose of these roles and responsibilities is to outline briefly the tasks required of a secondary teacher in the secondary school. As a school we are trying to achieve high standards by responding professionally, sensitively and caringly to the needs of all our pupils. All teachers must demonstrate a standard of knowledge, understanding and skills of the curriculum taught in the school. All teachers must demonstrate an understanding of the wider curriculum and administration needs of the Foundation. Purpose of the Job: To teach pupils within the school and to carry out such other associated duties as are reasonably assigned by the Administration. Job description: English TeacherKnowledge and understanding: • Have a detailed knowledge of the subject of English Language and Literature of the National Curriculum, A level, IGCSE, IBDP • Have a secure knowledge and understanding of the subject of English Language and Literature. • Cope securely with subject-related questions that students raise and know about students’ common misconceptions and mistakes in their specialist subject(s). • All secondary school curriculum and assessment guidelines. Planning and setting expectations: • Identify clear teaching objectives, content, lesson structures and sequences appropriate to the subject matter and the students being taught. • Set appropriate and demanding expectations for students’ learning and motivation. Set clear targets for students’ learning, building on prior attainment and experiences. • Identify students who have special educational needs and are gifted and talented, and know where to get assistance in order to give positive and targeted support. Where applicable, implement and keep records on Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Teaching and managing student learning: • Ensure effective teaching of whole classes, groups and individuals so that teaching objectives are met, momentum and challenge are maintained, and best use is made of teaching time. • Use teaching methods that keep students engaged, including stimulating students’ intellectual curiosity, effective questioning and response, clear presentation and good use of resources. • Set high expectations for students’ behavior, establishing and maintaining a good standard of discipline through well-focused teaching and through positive and productive relationships. Assessment and evaluation: • Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use this assessment for future teaching. • Mark and monitor students’ class and homework providing constructive oral and written feedback, setting targets for students’ progress. • When applicable, understand the demands expected of students in relation to the National Curriculum, A level, IGCSE, IBDP, KS4 and KS5. Relations with parents and wider community: • Know how to prepare and present informative reports to parents. • Recognize that learning takes place outside the school context and provide opportunities to develop students’ understanding by relating their learning to real and work-related examples. • Understand the need to cooperate with agencies outside school. Managing own performance and development: • Understand the need to take responsibility for their own professional development and to keep up to date with research and developments in pedagogy and in the subjects they teach. • Understand their professional responsibilities in relation to school policies, guidelines and practices. • Set a good example to the students they teach in their presentation and their personal conduct. • Evaluate their own teaching critically and use this to improve their effectiveness. Managing and developing staff and other adults: • Establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues, such as, co-teachers, specialist teachers and associate staff. Managing resources: • Select and make good use of books, equipment, ICT and other learning resources that enable teaching objectives to be met. • Most staff are required to serve as Form Tutors during their time at YCIS or YWIES. EAL SpecialistDuties: • Assess students on entry and recommend placement into English courses. • Provide in-class and/or withdrawal support for referred EAL student(s). • Provide in-class and/or curriculum development support for staff. • Assist with modification of assessments where appropriate. • Provide examination assistance for referred EAL students where needed. • Develop whole staff EAL professional development programmes. • Oversee the running of the SPP classes (years 7 and 8). • Assist with the creation of IEPs. • Administer informal language assessments to identify language problems. • Liaise with parents on behalf of teachers about academic progress. • Provide learning strategies and available learning resources for students. • Perform classroom observation when required to identify and observe EAL students. Qualification & Requirements: • B.Ed., or bachelor’s degree in related subjects plus a teaching certificate (PGCE & QTS & Country or State teaching licensure etc.) • Native English speaker, teaching will be conducted in English • Minimum 2 years of full-time relevant teaching experience • Previous experience of working with a diverse group of young children and/or implementation of inquiry-based learning approach is a plus • A level or IBDP, IGCSE experience is highly preferred Other Benefits and Packages: Teachers are offered two-year Contracts and the package includes- • Salary: Salary based on teacher’s own qualifications and teaching experience • Housing: A furnished apartment or housing allowance • Gratuity bonus: A maximum of 15% of total earned base salary over the term of the contract, including 9% for Fixed Gratuity plus a maximum of 6% for Variable Gratuity. • Professional Development Subsidy: RMB 5,000 per year (on pro-rata basis) • Insurance: Group medical insurance coverage including hospitalization, outpatient and emergency evacuation will be 100% covered by school. Also 90% covered for dependents from commencement date. • Children Tuition Subsidy: Fully provided for up to two children from K2 – Year 13 in the YCYW school network (subject to meeting Admissions requirements and available space). Early application recommended. • Airfare: – One economy class airfare from home city at the beginning of the contract (ticket will be reimbursed on the presentation of an original receipt) • – A taxable airfare allowance of RMB 10,000 at mid-contract (on pro-rata basis). • – A taxable exit airfare allowance of RMB 5,000 at the end of contract. • Baggage Allowance: RMB 2,000 max, reimbursed on the presentation of receipt. |
