JOB GOAL/PURPOSE:
To design and implement high-quality Chinese lessons that align with ISB’s Chinese Language and Literature, and Chinese as a World Language standards. The teacher will collaborate with the Chinese program leadership, divisional administration, and office of Learning to plan, review, and enhance curriculum units, ensuring alignment with relevant standards and ISB’s academic goals. The teacher will lead or support Chinese language and cultural integration and learning to prepare students for academic and personal success in a globalized world.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching practice
• Provide dynamic, engaging, integrated and culturally responsive Chinese lessons that support the development of student’s reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, the literary knowledge and language proficiency.
• Implement current, inclusive, asset-based, research informed best practices that promote social-emotional growth and academic achievement based on the learning needs of each student
• Monitor student progress and analyze data to inform teaching using a standards-based curriculum and in accordance with ISB’s assessment and reporting practices
• Facilitate student-centered learning that encourages deep exploration of Chinese language, literature, and cultural perspectives
• Prepare students for internal and external assessments
• Use evidence-based approach to student behavior management, effectively addressing student misbehaviors as learning opportunities
• Support school culture and be an advocate for positive “Dragon Spirit”
• Foster whole child development as a HS Mentoring (Advisory) teacher, including collaboratively running SEL courses.
• Effectively use technology to enhance student learning and access to the course/grade level Chinese curriculum
Schoolwide practice
• Ensure approach reflects and supports multiple forms of diversity
• Promote schoolwide collaboration through formal and informal engagement with others, sharing ideas and strategies, and participating in school development efforts
• Participate in Chinese curriculum development, adoption and adaptation, using ISB’s framework and collaborating with Chinese department and Office of Learning
• Collaborate with department colleagues, instructional coach, learning support teachers, counselors, and school leadership to create a positive and inclusive learning environment that fosters comprehensive language development
• Lead or participate in school events, and lead/support co-curricular programming
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Chinese Programs
Professional practice
• Take ownership for own professional development: set goals, take actions and grow as an educator with the goal of improved student outcomes
• Engage in professional reflection based on data, to think about, receive input on, and make changes to own practice
• Proactively involve parents in their child’s education, including regular communications focusing on the class curriculum and student progress
• Actively participate in curriculum planning sessions, common lesson planning meetings, vertical department meetings to support the team/department goal
• Attend professional development workshops and educational conferences to stay current on research in Chinese language and literacy, pedagogy and teaching and learning resources
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language and Literature, or Education Degree in Teaching Chinese Language or Chinese Studies; Master’s degree preferred
• Native level Mandarin proficiency with deep knowledge in Chinese language and culture
• Current, relevant teaching certification/licensure from a recognized/ accredited organization
• Minimum of five years of successful full-time teaching experience in High School or Secondary Grades
• Dedication to the Vision, Mission and Core Values of ISB
• Expertise in supporting High school students, and a deep knowledge of the unique needs of this age group
• An aptitude for building and maintaining positive relationships with students, educators, parents and others in school community
• Demonstrate competence in working with staff from different cultures and having the capacity to educate students for global competence through developmentally appropriate engagement
• Experience in Chinese curriculum development and adaptation using UBD framework for diverse learners
• Familiarity with Common Core Language Arts Standards, ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, Chinese National Language Arts Standards, AP, IBDP curriculum, etc.
• Motivated to seek and implement innovative and effective research informed teaching practices and learning approaches
• Demonstrated commitment to DEIJ and supporting our diverse international community
• Strong ICT skills and use of educational technology in classroom practices and familiarity with Microsoft 365 digital suite preferred
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in Mandarin and English
