JOB TITLE: English as an Additional Language (EAL) Educational Assistant
LOCATION: Science Park Campus
REPORTS TO: English as an Additional Language (EAL) Coordinator
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITES/DUTIES:
The Secondary School EAL Educational Assistant is primarily responsible for providing teaching and learning to address the needs of English Language Learners and will have light clerical support for the MS/HS EAL teachers. Although the list of responsibilities is multiple and varied, unexpected emergencies or circumstances may arise that require the assistant to perform other duties as assigned by the divisional principals.
As a member of the AISG community EAs are responsible for:
- ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.
- ensuring that school regulations pertaining to security, safety and proper usage of school property are followed.
- ensure that all school policies and procedures are understood and followed as related to the job responsibilities of this position.
- maintaining strict confidentiality of all student records and teacher conversations.
Classroom responsibilities/duties:
- Work one-on-one or with small groups to support differentiation of students’ learning experiences in the classroom with support and direction of the classroom and EAL teachers.
- Provide in-class (content area) support and offer assistance for EAL learners.
- Demonstrate knowledge of classroom content and pedagogy to assist with teaching and learning.
- Assist in lesson preparation by developing scaffolds to help our English learners access the content of their lessons (e.g. graphic organizers, note-taking grids, adapted texts).
- Understand and support procedures, routines, and classroom management practices.
- Demonstrate understanding and sensitivity to the academic, physical, social and emotional needs of the students within their age group.
- Administer WIDA/W-APT assessments and maintain WIDA/W-APT data.
- Administer F & P Running Records, as needed, and maintain student information and reading data.
- Manage computer files.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
A strong applicant will have successfully completed:
- A Bachelor’s degree, preferable if degree is in language acquisition and/or education
- Preferable if teaching qualification obtained
- 3 years working experience, preferably in a school setting, supporting teaching and learning
The applicant will demonstrate:
- Excellent spoken and written English language skills.
- Practical knowledge of initiative surrounding the use of IT equipment and software to support learning, preference for Macintosh experience.
- A professional demeanour and positive attitude.
