Outline
The King’s School Shenzhen International opened its new international campus in Autumn 2022, educating students from Grade 1-12 (UK Years 2-13). This is a state-of-the-art, purpose-built school based on its close relationship with The King’s School Canterbury, Europe’s oldest school and one of the most prestigious schools in England.
We adopt a genuine ‘whole-child’ philosophy throughout the school, focusing upon challenging young people through curriculum breadth and depth, with a high degree of active and creative learning, and a wide-ranging co-curricular programme, all supported by the best quality of pastoral care.
All teachers are expected to contribute to all aspects of a student’s development.
The role of Head of Academic for the Senior School will report directly to the Executive Principal, liaise closely with the Prep School (especially concerning the shared use of facilities and some teachers) and will carry important leadership as well as organisational responsibilities.
We are looking for an experienced and well-respected teacher and leader who understands how to deliver a Senior School curriculum embracing IGCSEs/A Levels and a wide range of co-curricular opportunities. S/he must understand how busy schools operate and have the skills, authority and personal manner to motivate pupils and staff. The role also heavily involves recruitment as we build our Senior School into a very high-quality section of King’s Shenzhen.
School Life and Routines
All teachers have shared responsibility for smooth daily running of the School as an entity – and for maintaining the general ethos, routine and pedagogy in line with the King’s School’s Aims and Ethos – as directed within reason by the Leadership team and the Executive Principal.
In so doing, they should:
– ensure that the School’s rules and policies are maintained
– attend School meetings and public events
– support co-curricular events and activities
– be prepared where necessary and within reason to cover for absent teachers
Safeguarding, Student Welfare and Pastoral Care
All teachers:
– must ensure that they are fully aware of policies and practices with regard to safeguarding and student welfare
– must ensure that they adhere to the published systems
– must be role models to all students at all times
– must be prepared to do pastoral, tutorial work as designated by school leadership
The Role
– Overseeing the daily organisation of the Senior School timetable and staffing for both the academic curriculum and co-curricular events
– Ensuring that pupils are classed and set appropriately
– Monitoring and tracking pupil progress
– Ensuring that assessment and reporting procedures are clearly communicated and fit for purpose
– Overseeing the conduct of international examinations (IGCSE, A Level and IELTS)
– Overseeing the production and processing of entrance test and assisting with interviewing for new Senior School pupils
– Guiding the Senior School tutor team on academic matters
– Monitoring the teaching and learning; mentoring teachers as required and interviewing pupils
– Overseeing the organisation of Senior School examinations, baseline tests, and the collection/distribution of academic data
– Helping with staff training
– Helping with staff recruitment
– Assisting with the organisation the Senior School calendar
– Organising Parent Teacher Consultations
– Attending SLT meetings as required
– As per all teachers: to carry out evening boarding supervision duties responsibly and fully in line with the School’s expectations and policy (usually once every two or three weeks)
– To do other appropriate duties as directed by the Executive Principal, such as:
- 1. attending some marketing events
- 2. attending whole school events such as Foundation Day
- 3. serving on, sometimes chairing, school committees
Personal Skills and Qualities
- – Master degree, teaching qualification and at least 5 years teaching experience
- – Previous work as Head of Department or Head of Year or similar is an advantage
- – Very good knowledge of IGCSEs and A Levels is essential
- – Previous work in school timetabling is an advantage
- – Strong communication skills, both on a personal and wider level; able to address an audience; high level of written English language
- – Strong IT skills, especially in Excel and with ability to extract data from databases
- – Willingness to work hard, often beyond the normal school hours
- – A team player who can also take responsibility for his/her own decisions
- – A good sense of humour
Salary and Benefits
We pay a competitive salary based upon experience. Benefits include a housing allowance, global health insurance, annual flights and 100% fee remission for two children in any department of the school.
